Best PEMF Mats 2026 10 Mat Comparison Guide Using 335 PEMF Studies

Ranked using optimal PEMF ranges from our 335-study analysis plus buyer priorities (pricing, returns, warranty), these are the best PEMF mats of 2026 – overall and by category.

Overall Best PEMF Mat

Healthy Wave Multi-Wave Mat

the overall best pemf mat the healthy wave multiwave mat

Editor’s Pick

#1 Best PEMF Signal

The best choice for PEMF signal settings, countless variations, includes infrared, red light therapy and backed by strong warranty & returns.

Pain Relief / Recovery Pick

Healthy Wave High Intensity

healthy wave high intensity pemf mat, best for pain relief and recovery

Pain Relief Pick

High Intensity

Best pain/recovery PEMF mat pick with settings that overlap common positive PEMF pain-study ranges (lower frequencies / moderate intensity).

See my top mat picks by category and below, in the comparison table more detailed info and my quick take on each mat!

Top Picks by Category

How these picks work

Why some brands show up more than once:
I rank by the priorities that matter (PEMF, safety, policies, pricing), not by trying to spread picks across brands.

  • Healthy Wave often wins for grounding, more PEMF options (Multi-Wave), and stronger policies for the price.
  • Returns & warranty matter at this price.

Best Overall PEMF Mat Picks

These are my “lowest regret” overall best PEMF mat picks: a best all around, a simpler/value alternative and a PEMF only alternative, all based on priorities that matter like I listed above.

Healthy Wave Multi-Wave PEMF Mat

the overall best pemf mat the healthy wave multiwave mat

Editor’s Pick

$995 – $2495

Best for: people who want the “lowest-regret” pick that covers it all with the most flexibility for future.

  • Most versatile PEMF settings in an infrared PEMF mat (great if you want test different PEMF settings to see what works for you).
  • Grounding-focused + EMF shielding, a thought out, intentional design compared to most infrared PEMF mats.
  • Strong policies for the price (returns + warranty make it a safer buy).

If you don’t want to overthink it, this is where I would start, you can’t go wrong.

More Healthy Wave Multi-wave details in comparison table below

Healthy Wave Original PRO

Best Simple Pick

$279 – $1499

Best for: people who want the Healthy Wave approach (grounding, EMF shielding + solid policies) without paying for the more advanced options.

  • Simple “set and go” PEMF that still covers the core use case for most people.
  • Grounding-focused design (one of the main reasons Healthy Wave keeps showing up).
  • Better low-risk buy than most similarly priced mats ( strong returns + warranty.
  • Multi-therapy including infrared, red light therapy and PEMF

If Multi-Wave feels like more than you need, this is the cleanest “best overall” alternative.

Details on the PEMF of these mats on our Healthy Wave Mat Review page

OMI Beyond PEMF Mat

OMI beyond PEMF mat

Best PEMF-Only Alternative

$990 – $1990

Best for: PEMF-focused buyers who want a PEMF-only mat (no infrared) with versatile PEMF settings.

  • Fully adjustable intensity (easy to start gentle and scale up).
  • 3 PEMF waveforms and 99 frequency settings for people who care most about the PEMF signal.
  • Trade-off: less “comfort” than an infrared PEMF mat this is the PEMF specialist option.

If all you want is PEMF (and you don’t care about heat/infrared therapy benefits), this is the one to look at.

Best PEMF Mats for Pain Relief & Recovery

Research note: I didn’t find controlled head-to-head “best setting” PEMF studies for pain, but across the literature the heaviest weighting of positive results shows up around ~10–20 Gauss and under ~30 Hz. See the charts and sources on my PEMF for Pain Analysis page.

Healthy Wave High Intensity PEMF Mat

healthy wave high intensity pemf mat, best for pain relief and recovery

High-Intensity Pick

$399 – $1649

Best for: pain relief/recovery/bone focused users who want a stronger PEMF intensity for shorter, more treatment focused sessions.

  • Higher intensity allows for shorter session duration
  • Runs in the window where pain studies cluster (this mat: 7-30 Gauss, <30 Hz) (see note above)
  • Infrared heat and RLT are both also great for pain relief

If you want the best all around for pain relief and don’t care about maximum signal customization, start here.

Healthy Wave Multi-Wave PEMF Mat

healthy wave multiwave best pemf mat

Recovery / Flex Pick

$995 – $2495

Best for: people who want one mat for pain + recovery with the most flexibility to adjust PEMF settings as desired.

  • Most versatile settings in this lineup (easy to dial in what feels best).
  • Great for multiple PEMF settings through a single session and adjustable intensity.
  • Strong “lowest-regret” choice if you’re not sure whether you’ll prefer gentle sessions or stronger ones long-term.

If you want one mat that can cover lots of pain/recovery/sleep/all scenarios, this is the safe bet.

More Healthy Wave Multi-wave details in comparison table below

OMI Beyond PEMF Mat

OMI beyond PEMF mat

PEMF-Only Option

$990 – $1990

Best for: PEMF-focused buyers who want pain relief PEMF without heat/infrared, and like high adjustability for experimenting.

  • Fully adjustable intensity (easy to start mild and work up).
  • 3 waveform options for people who care most about the PEMF side.
  • Easy to build multiple PEMF protocols as complex as you wish to run as preset programs.
  • Does lack infrared heat, which should be a consideration because infrared is a proven source of pain relief.

If you know you want PEMF-only for pain/recovery, this is the specialist pick.

Best PEMF Mats for Sleep & Relaxation

For sleep and relaxation there isn’t a need for high intensity PEMF, but you will want to focus on lower frequencies like I outline in my PEMF frequency guide, and you’ll want to combine with deeply relaxing therapeutic infrared heat, here are 3 top choices that have you covered.

Swipe ← / → to see all

Healthy Wave 4 Therapy PRO Mat

Best for Sleep

$1499

Best for: nightly wind-down routines, sleep support, and people who want a simple “set and relax” mat.

  • Gentle, comfort-first setup (simple settings, easy to use consistently).
  • PEMF + Infrared with a low/gentle PEMF intensity from 1-30 Hz, and infrared from amethyst crystals.
  • Strong policies compared to most mats in this price range.

If your main goal is sleep and you want something easy to stick with, start here.

Healthy Wave Rainbow Crystal Chakra Mats

Ritual / Chakra Pick

$809 – $1799

Best for: people who like a more ritual-style wellness routine (chakras, stones, calming sessions) and want a mat they’ll actually use nightly.

  • Feels more “spa/ritual” than technical.
  • PEMF + Infrared + Multi-wavelength light therapy (multi-color).
  • Same brand advantages you care about (policies + overall design).

If you’re the type who sticks with routines better when it feels “intentional,” this is the pick.

Healthy Wave Multi-Wave PEMF Mat

healthy wave multiwave best pemf mat

Flexible Long-Term

$995 – $2495

Best for: people who want a sleep-friendly mat now but don’t want to outgrow it later.

  • Can run gentle sessions for sleep, but also shift into recovery/pain protocols.
  • Most flexible settings in this lineup (room to experiment without switching mats).
  • Often the lowest-regret choice if you’re unsure which style you’ll prefer long-term.

If you want one mat that can do sleep now and more later, this is it.

OMI Full Body & Beyond PEMF Mats Deal

the full body PEMF mat and Beyond PEMF mat from OMI, available as a package deal

Deal Summary

  • 2 PEMF Mats for $1750 USD
  • OMI Full Body Mat, and –
  • OMI Beyond PEMF Mat
  • The Catch? Wait 2 months after purchasing OMI Full Body Mat for $1250 till you can order the Beyond mat for $500

Probably the best PEMF mat deal I’ve seen. OMI’s promo is essentially two mats for $1,750: buy the Full Body mat ($1,250), then about 2 months later they let you add the Beyond mat for $500 (they send a whole second mat + controller). So you end up with a solid “starter” full-body mat plus a more advanced PEMF option for a crazy low total. 3-year warranty too (but only when you buy direct from OMI).

Healthy Wave 5 Therapy Classic PEMF Mats

4 healthy wave original pemf mats on sale

Deal Summary

  • Many sizes, 4 and 5 therapy mats available
  • $279 to $1499
  • Better option than most popular mats because of 30 frequency settings + grounding layer

Best single-mat deals right now. The Healthy Wave Original/Classic PRO line (not the High-Intensity) offers a lot for the money: 4-Therapy PRO (the one I own), 5-Therapy PRO (adds red light), and the small flexible wrap-style mat I use around the house (great on the couch around your back/legs). These beat a lot of “popular” mats because you’re getting 30 frequency settings, 90-day returns, grounding, EMF shielding, strong policies, and usually better pricing.

OMI PEMF Mat & Accessory Package Deals

omi pemf mat package deal mats, 3 package deals shown

Deal Summary

  • All packages include the OMI Full Body PEMF Mat
  • Package Price: $1350 (except Beyond PEMF)
  • Choose one accessory:
  • PEMF Minimat & Ring, PEMF Chair/pad, or PEMF Face Mask

Best value if you want PEMF accessories for PEMF spot treatment (elbow, knee, etc). OMI has bundles around $1,350 that include a full body mat + mini mat / face mask / ring (the ring is great for targeting a specific spot). In some cases you’re basically getting the accessory for what other brands charge for just a mat. They also have a Beyond bundle (~$2,200) that includes the mat + Power Band (wrappable). All bundles include a 3-year warranty (but only when purchased direct from OMI).

Low Gauss PEMF Mats (Gentle Intensity Picks)

Low Gauss here refers to the PEMF intensity, (not EMF), I’ve broken these into groups for mats that offer low intensity which is adjustable and mats which operate on a single, low PEMF intensity.

Healthy Wave Multi-Wave PEMF Mat

Editor’s Pick

$995 – $2495

More Healthy Wave Multi-wave details in comparison table below

This is the only multi-therapy mat with adjustable intensity out there. Includes infrared heat (great for a sore back) and red light therapy. Advanced PEMF settings include 2 waveforms, 30 frequencies and the 5 intensity levels

OMI Beyond PEMF Mat

Advanced PEMF

$990-$1990

More OMI Beyond PEMF Mat details in comparison table below

A PEMF only option, but one with very advanced PEMF setting options, 3 waveforms, 99 frequencies, and fully adjustable intensity range. This is the top in PEMF only mats, and you can run the intensity as low or high as you want.

Bemer Mat

Well Known Pick with Multi-Intensity

$4590 – $5890

More Bemer Mat details in comparison table below

Bemer is a very well known PEMF only mat. Offers 10 intensity levels (all low Gauss) which is great, but only their single waveform and 2 frequency options, price is quite a bit north of other brands.

Healthy Wave Original Pro PEMF Mat

Best Price on a Low Gauss Mat

$279 – $1499

The best price you can find on a low Gauss mat will be on one of these Original PRO mats by Healthy Wave. The frequency range is in the research sweet spot of 1-30Hz and the mat contains an grounding layers, EMF shielding and comes with strong returns & warranty.

OMI Full Body PEMF Mat

Most Frequencies

$235 – $1250

More OMI Full Body PEMF Mat details in comparison table below

Another PEMF only option, the OMI full body mat offers low Gauss intensity, and 99 frequencies – more than any other mat but you don’t get the benefit of the multi-therapy. Great for frequency flexibility while at a single low intensity. Good for value buyers who want an PEMF only mat.

HigherDose PEMF Mat

Best Return Policy

$699 – $1295

More HigherDose PEMF Mat details in comparison table below

This low gauss pick has the best return policy of all mats, however it only offers 4 frequencies. It also has infrared therapy like Healthy Wave mats, but doesn’t include a grounding layer like they do. It’s a well known popular pick these days from HigherDose’s social media presence but better overall PEMF mat value can be found.

Healthy Wave Multi-Wave PEMF Mat

the overall best pemf mat the healthy wave multiwave mat

PEMF Summary

  • 2 Waveforms
  • 30 Frequencies
  • 5 Intensities
  • 3 Drop Off Rates
  • Programmable & One Click Pre-Programs
  • 8 PEMF coils (best in class PEMF coverage over the mat)

Best for: people who want advanced PEMF in a mat that also includes the “recovery/pain extras” (infrared heat + RLT).

  • Most versatile PEMF settings here (great if you like dialing things in).
  • Flexible enough to match a lot of protocols from research (pulse duration, intensity, frequency, waveform control).
  • Includes infrared heat + red light, and the strongest returns/warranty in this category.

If you want “advanced PEMF” without giving up features like infrared while keeping your PEMF protocol options open for future this is an easy choice.

OMI Beyond PEMF Mat

PEMF Summary

  • 3 Waveforms
  • 99 Frequencies
  • Fully Adjustable Intensity
  • 1 Drop Off Rates
  • Programmable & One Click Pre-Programs
  • 8 PEMF coils (best in class PEMF coverage over the mat)

Best for: a PEMF-only buyer who wants a very adjustable, focused PEMF device.

  • Fully adjustable intensity (1–100%) + 3 waveforms.
  • Frequency options go up to 99 Hz (I still personally focus most use around the lower ranges you see in research, 1-30 Hz).
  • Lightweight, simple, and all about PEMF – no heat/infrared bundled.

If all you want is PEMF control (and you don’t care about the “comfort add-ons” like infrared), this is the specialist pick.

Healthy Wave High-Intensity PEMF Mat

PEMF Summary

  • 1 Waveforms
  • 30 Frequencies
  • 1 (High) Intensity
  • 1 Drop Off Rates
  • One Click Pre-Programs & Custom Frequency Selection
  • 8 PEMF coils (Best in class coverage over the mat)

Best for: people that want high strength PEMF at home within the effective frequency range (see our PEMF Signal Analysis page).

  • Tested higher average output intensity across the mat surface (this is its main advantage), this allows for shorter PEMF sessions.
  • 32 frequency settings, built for simple, strong sessions.
  • Trade-off: less waveform / protocol flexibility than Multi-Wave or OMI Beyond.

If you want strong, treatment focused PEMF and don’t need multi-waveform control, choose this.

Editor’s Take

This is my number one recommended PEMF mat for a number of reasons: multiple PEMF waveforms, intensities, pulse durations and frequency settings in the most researched PEMF range, one of the very best warranty and return policies, and the inclusion of infrared & red light. Not to mention including an actual grounding layer reducing your body’s static voltage (something most mats do not do). You really can’t go wrong with this.

Editor’s Take

This mat offers tested higher intensity through the most effective frequency range, a great option for something a little closer to clinical strength while being safe for at home use. Operates in the range of intensity & frequency where PEMF for pain studies cluster. The infrared heat, and red light therapy make it an even stronger pain/recovery pick. (Healthy Wave shows some sizes out of stock, note there is a high intensity version of the Chakra rainbow mats which is in stock.)

Editor’s Take

This mat is in the top for most advanced PEMF you can get currently. 3 waveform options, 1 to 99 Hz frequencies, and stronger but fully adjustable intensity up to 10 Gauss. It’s very lightweight which is a plus, but it is missing the infrared you get with the mats that include crystals. It does require a smart phone, or table, of any kind or operate using the OMI app. Competitive warranty, can’t recommend this one enough for anyone looking for a PEMF only option.

Editor’s Take

This is the original PEMF mat offered by OMI, however it’s still a top option in value for the PEMF you get. With 1-99 Hz in frequency options it still offers more than most the popular PEMF mats of today (only lacking the infrared heat of most the popular mats). They have package deals and PEMF devices you won’t see elsewhere (like their PEMF face mask). Combined with a competitive warranty this is a great PEMF only choice. (Also they have an unusually great deal at the moment, see the best value tab above.)

Editor’s Take

Bemer’s offering a quality PEMF product and have been around longer than anyone. Their mat’s also been used in more research studies than any other, still, comparing those results on our Bemer review page they aren’t overly compelling. Some would say their PEMF intensity is underpowered, they lack frequency set points and that it’s overpriced, but many people swear by it. Important note: Evo line is NOT compatible with Pro/Classic line applicators which are still available (more details on the review page)

Editor’s Take

HigherDose offers the best return policy (recently updated from a 30 day return to 120 day, 4 months!) and a solid infrared mat. Very limited PEMF settings (only 4 frequencies and no adjustments to intensity, waveform or pulse duration) , but they clearly believe in the product with their return policy. Be wary of warranty policies, mat controllers are the most likely component to fail and some brands offer 5 year warranties on those. Doesn’t include a grounding layer to remove body static voltage charge.

Editor’s Take

BonCharge’s PEMF mat offers red light in addition to infrared like some others, however one sticking point is its’ 60 minute heating timer. Sometimes I’ll leave my mat on for the day so it’s warm when I return, this can’t really be done with a 60 minute max on the infrared timer. Some of their PEMF attributes like intensity aren’t stated by BonCharge, to me this is like a car company selling a car without stating the horsepower, it’s something I want to know.

Editor’s Take

Therasage’s PEMF mat includes 4 therapies which is great however they don’t really stand out on any issue (except for lacking clarity on some PEMF settings as we noted), except for the TENS pad inclusion which for me isn’t something I would like to combine with PEMF anyway (and could always be purchased separately). There are similar mats offering better return and warranty policies.

Editor’s Take

Off the bat, all sales are final (no returns) on the Kala PEMF mat (it’s in their detailed return policy page, no returns on PEMF mats). I wouldn’t recommend it for this reason alone; they seem to specialize in RLT and not PEMF. There are a number of similarities between the Kala and Therasage mats and they both leave something to be desired with reported PEMF specs and controls. No grounding layer to remove body’s static voltage.

Editor’s Take

The QRS mat is quite different than most when it comes to controls, the simple 3 programs may appeal to some. Comes with a fantastic warranty policy. Many people may wish for a bit higher intensity option, however the QRS is somewhat comparable to the Bemer with intensity and its price. For people wanting more control over their PEMF frequencies I would recommend one with more settings. Check around before buying the QRS, there are different retailers with different prices and policies.

Evaluation Criteria

Our 5 criteria to help you choose the best PEMF mat for you.

PEMF Performance

Does the PEMF mat operate within the optimal PEMF settings range as found by our analysis of 335 PEMF research studies?

PEMF Options

How many options for frequency, intensity and waveform does the mat have? Positive study results are found at many different settings – does your device offer them?

PEMF Safety

Is the brand’s product registered with the FDA? Is the range of the PEMF intensity & frequency within international guidelines? Or does the brand even report their intensity figures at all?

Return Policies

PEMF products are expensive, what kind of return policy is there? Are you out of luck if you don’t find it helps after a month or two? Some brands don’t allow any returns.

Warranty Policies

Most PEMF devices are pretty expensive, so does the warranty match up? Especially when it comes to the PEMF device controller, the most likely component to fail.

Quick question answers to help with context before we dive into the comparisons, click the heading to expand:

What is PEMF Therapy & What is a PEMF mat or device?

While the dictionary doesn’t yet have a definition, we know that PEMF therapy is the application of a pulsing magnetic field across the body or specific area of the body being treated.

Sparing the jargon, in essence the idea is that the pulsing magnetic field in a way charges the cells of your body and aligns polarity across the cell membranes facilitating better function.

PEMF devices come in all shapes and sizes, some with smaller applicators designed to treat one area, some, like a PEMF mat, designed to provide full body PEMF therapy coverage.

How do we classify different PEMF therapies and mats?

While there is no official classification system, we do know that PEMF, a pulsing electromagnetic field, is defined primarily by 3 factors: frequency, intensity and waveform shape.

shows 3 examples of lower to higher frequency sine waveforms
PEMF Frequency Examples
shows 3 examples of different waveform intensities from low to medium to high
PEMF Intensity Examples
shows 3 examples of different waveform types, square wave, sine wave and sawtooth wave
PEMF Waveform Examples

Every PEMF therapy from every device will have these 3 attributes, because this is how we quantify and describe a pulsing magnetic field.

We can therefore classify the PEMF therapy of a PEMF device or mat as, for example, low frequency or high frequency, low intensity or high intensity, or by what waveform it uses.

Using terms like high or low for frequency and intensity is arbitrary, but we tend to consider from 0 up to 50 Hz as low frequency and from 0 to 10 Gauss as low intensity; anything higher leaning towards the high frequency, high intensity range.

PEMF waveforms can come in any shape but what we do know from recording the waveform types of the 335 PEMF research studies we reviewed is that the most common tested waveform is the sine wave with the square wave in close second.

There is one last defining attribute which most PEMF mats do not adjust, and this is pulse duration or drop off rate, referring to how quickly the magnetic field is switched off during the cycle.

Who can benefit from a PEMF mat?

This is the question most of us are asking, myself included, does PEMF therapy really work and is a PEMF mat going to help me?

Finding only unsatisfying answers to this question online, let’s refer to our own review of the PEMF literature to find some answers.

From the 335 PEMF studies we compiled into our database and reviewed there were quite a number of topics covered, primarily using human cell cultures, but also animal tests.

By the way, as you’ll see next in the PEMF Performance section, the analysis we did of our study database is how we decided which mats cover the best range of PEMF settings.

We compiled a database of 335 PEMF Studies from Pubmed & analyzed the results
We compiled a database of 335 PEMF Studies from Pubmed & analyzed the results

From the database some of the most commonly researched topics were: bone healing, pain relief, cancer, brittle bones, inflammation, back pain, cartilage growth, arthritis, and cardio/blood flow.

Across the board most studies actually found positive results regardless of the topic, in the 80% plus positive findings range.

Keep in mind however, that these positive findings don’t mean that PEMF therapy can cure pain or cancer or any other ailment; all a positive finding from a PEMF study means is that they did find an improvement over the baseline without PEMF therapy.

What we’ve learned is that although PEMF isn’t a cure all it certainly has been demonstrated to add benefit across a wide range of pain and other health issues.

Check out our in depth page on PEMF mat benefits where I discuss the 5 most often felt benefits, my own PEMF mat experience and summarize the PEMF benefits we saw in our research database.

PEMF Performance

How close do the mats hit the proven optimal range?

We skipped brand claims and went to the research.

335 PEMF studies gave us data driven reasoning for optimal PEMF range and evidence to back top picks in PEMF mats.

What exactly did we do?

We compiled a database of 335 PEMF Studies from Pubmed.

Classified them according to PEMF signal

Performed a macro-analysis of the studies

Determined optimal PEMF range based on PEMF setting & outcome

Used the findings to rank PEMF mats

Disclaimer: the copyright of all referenced PEMF studies belong to the respective authors & their associates. Health Mat Review has assimilated a large number of these studies for a macro-analysis of their PEMF properties to give ourselves & our readers greater perspective of the current PEMF therapy knowledge base.

Let’s look briefly here at our optimal PEMF range conclusions and analysis results that got us there, then we’ll look at how well the 10 mats cover the range we found.

Optimal PEMF Range from Analysis

You can view the more in depth bar charts on the other tabs above for the frequency, intensity and waveforms from our analysis but here’s the summary:

Optimal Range

  • Frequency
    • 0-50Hz
  • Intensity
    • 0-25 Gauss
  • Waveform
    • Sinewave (most studied)
    • Squarewave (2nd most studied)

These are the ranges which our macro analysis showed the most positive result studies being performed and the ranges which we’ll look for in PEMF mats.

Personally I have a bias to use frequencies only up to or below 30 Hz, from my own adverse experience and because that is the upper range of the Earth’s frequencies as well.

The PEMF Signal ranges found most commonly to produce positive results in our analysis of 335 PEMF research studies

Frequency Range Results

The first thing you likely notice on this frequency chart is the longest green bar right at the top, in the lowest frequency category.

pemf study results per frequency range

Main Takeaway

  • The majority of positive results with PEMF therapy in the database have been found to occur at frequencies of 50 Hz or lower

Intensity Range Results

The first thing you likely notice on the chart above is the large green bar right across the middle, but don’t miss the fact that the first bar only spans a range of 1 Gauss compared to the second and third bars which span ranges of 10 and 15 Gauss respectively.

pemf study results per intensity range

Main Takeaway

  • The very low intensity range of 0 to 1 Gauss, the narrowest range band by far of only 1 Gauss versus the next smallest band of 10 Gauss, showed a disproportionate amount of positive result studies for the size of its’ range band

Waveform Results

This chart shows how many studies from the database listed having used which type of waveform, the first thing you’ll notice is that 2 stand out way beyond the rest. Fun fact, the infamous Nasa PEMF study used a square waveform.

Main Takeaway

  • The majority of the positive result studies by far will have been performed using a sine or a square wave

PEMF Options

How many PEMF settings does each mat offer?

Now having looked at which mats offer PEMF in the proven optimal range from our study analysis in the section above, lets look at how many setting options each provides.

First I want to show you a chart from our signal analysis to emphasize why I think number of PEMF settings is important.

In the chart below we’ve put a dot for each PEMF study from our database, green if it was positive, gray if neutral, and black if negative.

The vertical location of a dot is based on how high or low the PEMF intensity of the study was, while the horizontal location of a dot is based on how high or low the PEMF frequency was.

intensity frequency dot chart of all results
PEMF Therapy Intensity vs Frequency Chart (log scale) from Health Mat Review’s study of 335 PEMF Research Studies.

You might have noticed in the tabbed sections above that the difference between the lowest and highest frequency or intensity from a study in the database can differ by a number of order of magnitudes (ie. 10 times, 100 times, 1000 times or greater).

The way we’re able to fit it all onto one chart is by using something called a logarithmic scale.

Don’t worry about understanding logarithmic scale, the only important thing to understand is that just 2 lines over is equivalent to 100 times difference, 3 lines over is 1000 times difference.

Main Takeaway

  • PEMF research studies from our database found positive results from a very wide range of frequencies and intensities

What this means to me at least is that unless you already know the best frequency or intensity for you, then pick a PEMF mat that will give you a wide range of frequency and intensiity options to try for yourself.

Not to mention the chart above doesn’t take into account different waveforms used in the studies also.

This is why PEMF Options and settings is our second criteria after performance when it comes to PEMF mats.

Let’s look simplified side by side for each mat how many frequency, intensity, waveform and pulse duration options each comes with.

PEMF Safety

FDA Registration and Guidelines for Electro-magnetic Field Exposure

PEMF mats in general are safe to use with some individualistic considerations to be made, for example contraindications for certain groups of people, or how we may react differently to PEMF.

I once had an adverse experience with PEMF myself which wasn’t long lasting, just uncomfortable – you may want to check out our PEMF frequency page for some practical guidance on picking PEMF frequencies.

Otherwise, we can really only look at FDA “approvals” and some other guidelines for EMF exposures.

FDA approval is a term that gets thrown around a lot, but it’s actually only reserved for Class 3 high-risk devices, like for example a pacemaker.

When it comes to PEMF mats, its really just a couple things to understand:

  • FDA Registration:
    • Is the brand/company registered on the FDA website?
    • Some PEMF brands are registered using a different name than their branded name
    • You can search companies here on the FDA site
  • 510(k) Premarket notification:

Let’s look at what I gathered up for the different brand’s FDA registration numbers and whether they have a 510k premarket notification or if their product’s exempt – either way it means the FDA’s allowing it to be sold and it’s considered safe.

Electro-magnetic Field Exposure Guidelines

In our modern world everyone is surrounded by electronics of some kind, and they all give off an electromagnetic field, also known as EMF.

Because of this the ICNIRP, the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, was founded in 1992 for the purpose of finding consensus on safe levels of electromagnetic field exposure.

ICNIRP Logo
ICNIRP magnetic field exposure guidelines chart, blank unedited original
ICNIRP Magnetic Field Exposure Guidelines Chart

Non-ionizing refers to electromagnetic radiation/fields with frequencies too low to ionize atoms or molecules, meaning too low to heat up body tissue, and PEMF falls into this category.

On the ICNIRP website, if you dig through their literature you’ll find a chart depicting intensity and frequency and what range is safe for public and occupational exposure.

We can actually try to draw on this chart the operating ranges of different PEMF devices to be able to visualize their operating ranges; this is what I’ve done for you in the following images for each mat.

Some important things to note are that the upper line on their chart is the occupational exposure maximum recommendation, the lower is general public, in other words occupational limited exposure for (~8hrs a day), general public for continuous, long-term exposure for anyone.

A typical PEMF therapy session is far shorter than these continuous-exposure time frames, so even intensities that approach or exceed the occupational line are likely not a problem for brief usage.

However, if you use a PEMF mat frequently or for extended periods (like sleeping on it overnight), these charts give a useful context for how your device’s magnetic field compares with internationally recognized exposure levels.

In the ICNIRP charts below, it can be seen that the magnetic intensity (PEMF intensity) is on the left hand vertical axis, and the horizontal axis is magnetic field frequency (PEMF frequency).

The charts show the intensity in Tesla, but more commonly used when speaking of PEMF is Gauss, just a different unit like kilometers to miles and I show the conversion on the chart for you.

The green and red line, I’ve added these colors as an overlay, however according to the ICNIRP recommendations, anything under the green line is what is considered safe for general public exposure, and up to the red line is considered safe for occupational exposure.

Healthy Wave Multi-Wave PEMF Mat — Operating Range vs ICNIRP Magnetic Field Limits

Chart showing the Healthy Wave Multi-wave mat's 1 to 30 Hz, and 1.5 Gauss average, 5 gauss peak, range compared to ICNIRP magnetic field safety limits.
ICNIRP Chart: chart original in black & white, any color I’ve added to show operating ranges. Depicts Healthy Wave Multi-Wave Mat operating range: 1 to 30 Hz frequency, adjustable 5 level intensity with 5 Gauss peak and 1.5 Gauss average on mat as reported by Healthy Wave.
  • Using Multi-Wave controller above (incl. 3 drop off rates & 2 waveforms);
  • Classic controller also included, not shown on chart above (non-adjustable intensity, single waveform, 3.5 Gauss average, 15 Gauss peak, with 1 to 30 Hz frequency)
  • Shows tested peak gauss and average – PEMF will have varying intensity depending on distance from PEMF coils (height above mat, horizontal distance from coil location; this is true of all PEMF mats)

One aspect I particularly like about the Multi-Wave (and the Healthy Wave PRO mats), that no matter what PEMF setting you select of the many options, it’s always operating within the safe range.

Healthy Wave High Intensity PRO PEMF Mat — Operating Range vs ICNIRP Magnetic Field Limits

Chart showing the Healthy Wave High intensity PRO PEMF mat's 0.25 to 32 Hz frequency and 7 Gauss average, 30 Gauss peak intensity operating range compared to the ICNIRP magnetic field safety limits.
ICNIRP Chart: chart original in black & white, any color I’ve added to show operating ranges. Depicts Healthy Wave High Intensity PEMF mat operating range: 0.25 Hz to 32 Hz frequencies, and 7 Gauss average intensity across the mat, with 30 Gauss peak as reported by Healthy Wave.

In this case you can see at max frequency the high intensity mat just begins to enter the beyond occupational exposure line – as I reviewed above occupational exposure is ~8hrs a day on a full time basis and a short PEMF session above is likely safe.

Takeaway: if I was using the Healthy Wave high intensity mat to get closer to clinical PEMF at home I would use it at a lower frequency setting if I was using it overnight or for long durations.

Like I recommended at the top of the page, can’t say enough good things about the OMI Beyond PEMF mat, right within the occupational exposure lines on the chart above with amazing PEMF setting options 1 to 99 Hz and fully adjustable intensity (along with their multiple waveforms, and 100 preset programs). ICNIRP Chart: chart original in black & white, any color I’ve added to show operating ranges. Depicts Bemer mat operating range: 2 frequencies 10Hz and 33Hz, 10 intensity settings up to 0.35 Gauss for the mat and up to 1.5 Gauss for the point applicators.

The Bemer mat operates fully within the safe range for frequency and intensity on the ICNIRP chart.

HigherDOSE PEMF Mat — Operating Range vs ICNIRP Magnetic Field Limits

Chart showing the Higherdose PEMF mat's 4 frequency (3, 7.8, 10 and 23 Hz) and tested 0.616 Gauss operating range compared to ICNIRP magnetic field safety limits.
ICNIRP Chart: chart original in black & white, any color I’ve added to show operating ranges. Depicts HigherDose PEMF mat operating range: 4 frequencies 3, 7.8, 10 and 23 Hz and at their tested 0.616 Gauss intensity.

HigherDose’s mat operates fully within the safe range, limited number of frequencies however with only 4.

BonCharge PEMF Mat Max — Operating Range vs ICNIRP Magnetic Field Limits

Chart showing the BonCharge PEMF Mat’s 1 to 30Hz frequency, and unknown gauss intensity operating range compared to ICNIRP magnetic field safety limits.
ICNIRP Chart: chart original in black & white, any color I’ve added to show operating ranges. Depicts BonCharge operating range: frequency from 1 to 30 Hz, **intensity is not stated by BonCharge however others have tested 20 Gauss off of their mat, depicted above.

BonCharge likely operates close to or within the safe range, only based off mat testing by others which said 20 Gauss (so it does reach just beyond the safe occupational exposure range), however they haven’t provided any testing or stated the intensity on their website.

Therasage TheraPro PEMF Mat — Operating Range vs ICNIRP Magnetic Field Limits

Chart showing the Therasage Therapro PEMF mat's 8 frequency settings of 3, 8, 25, 40, 48, 56, and 64 Hz at their stated 966 Gauss intensity operating range compared to ICNIRP magnetic field safety limits.
ICNIRP Chart: chart original in black & white, any color I’ve added to show operating ranges. Depicts Therasage Therapro PEMF mat operating range: 8 frequency settings (3, 8, 25, 40, 48, 56, 64 Hz) and intensity stated by Therasage in their manual, 966 Gauss.

Based on the intensity stated in Therasage’s user manual of 966 Gauss, all the PEMF settings are above the safe occupational exposure range – something to keep in mind if you plan on sleeping on the mat or spending extended duration sessions on it.

However, it is unlikely with their style of PEMF mat that 966 Gauss is the true intensity, testing by others of similar mats has shown ~22 Gauss which would bring all settings except the top 4 back under the occupational exposure line.

Kala PEMF Mat — Operating Range vs ICNIRP Magnetic Field Limits

Chart showing the Kala PEMF mat's 8 frequency settings of 3, 8, 25, 40, 48, 56, and 64 Hz at their stated 966 Gauss intensity operating range compared to ICNIRP magnetic field safety limits.
ICNIRP Chart: chart original in black & white, any color I’ve added to show operating ranges. Depicts Kala PEMF mat’s operating range: 8 frequency settings (3, 8, 25, 40, 48, 56, 64 Hz) and intensity stated by Kala, 966 Gauss .

It can be seen that the Kala Mat operates effectively the same, frequency & intensity as Therasage and same goes; the 966 Gauss they state puts the full PEMF operating range above the occupational exposure line.

However, it is unlikely with their style of PEMF mat that 966 Gauss is the true intensity, testing by others of similar mats has shown 22 Gauss intensity, which would bring the PEMF range back under the occupational exposure line, except for the top 4 frequencies.

Purewave QRS-101 PEMF Mat — Operating Range vs ICNIRP Magnetic Field Limits

Chart showing the Purewave QRS101 PEMF mat's 3 intensity level up to 0.4 Gauss and 0.1 to 10,000 Hz frequency (not inclusive, specific frequencies only) operating range compared to ICNIRP magnetic field safety limits.
ICNIRP Chart: chart original in black & white, any color I’ve added to show operating ranges. Depicts Purewave QRS-101 PEMF mat operating range: between 0.1 and 10,000 Hz frequency (rates between these numbers, specific Hz frequencies aren’t reported), and 3 intensity settings up to 0.4 Gauss.

The Purewave QRS-101 mat operates fully within the occupational exposure limits, there isn’t much information available about their specific frequency operating range however it’s stated its between 0.1 and 10,000 Hz, their programs cycle around within this frequency range.

Warranty Policy Details

Does the warranty back the product up?

PEMF mats and devices need two components, the applicator like the mat, and the controller which creates the PEMF signal.

The applicator is a simple construction of a metal coil, usually copper, the controller is a complex electronic device which uses transistors and diodes to rapidly turn on and off the PEMF signal.

You’ll notice all PEMF controllers get warm, even hot, during usage because of the on/off switching of transistors.

It’s because of this demanding operation that between a PEMF applicator, and a PEMF controller, the PEMF controller is the component most likely to fail over time in any PEMF set up.

I’ve compiled the details of each brand’s warranty and some brands do include extended warranties with additional limited coverage or nuance, see the table below for the warranty policy details of all the mats.

Where to find PEMF Therapy?

If you’re looking for somewhere local to try out PEMF therapy, try checking our PEMF directory.

We built the directory with the emphasis that the locations included offer PEMF therapy as a service at their location, meaning you can pay for a single session and don’t need to buy a device.

You may find after only a few sessions that you would be better off purchasing your own device however as they can add up quickly, usually in the $50-$100 range per session.

Some PEMF devices come with excellent money back guarantees, which is one way to try PEMF for yourself risk free. Such as the Healthy Wave PEMF mats with 90 days to reconsider (as long as the product is not damaged in any way).

Where to find Bemer Therapy?

While building our PEMF directory, it seemed to make a lot of sense to try and build a directory for Bemer therapy as well.

Normally you may be able to try Bemer therapy with one of their IBMs, independent Bemer distributors, but usually they will want you to purchase a device afterward.

Our Bemer therapy directory is focused on locations like chiropractic, massage, etc. where you may go and pay for a Bemer therapy session without any pressure to buy a device afterward.

Frequently Asked Questions

A PEMF mat is a type of pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy device designed in the form of a full-body mat. It emits low-frequency electromagnetic pulses that stimulate the body’s cells to support circulation, relaxation, and recovery. Unlike smaller PEMF devices that target specific areas with a handheld applicator or coil, a PEMF mat delivers the therapy evenly across the entire body while you lie on it.

The best PEMF mat is the Healthy Wave Multi-Wave Mat, which ranks highest on my five-point PEMF Evaluation Criteria. It stands out for its strong safety profile, alignment with parameters used in scientific research, exceptional flexibility in frequency and waveform settings, and a generous 90-day return policy — the best among advanced PEMF mats. The combination with infrared and longer PEMF pulse duration is why this is my top pick over the OMI Beyond.

A PEMF mat generates PEMF therapy (a pulsing electromagnetic field) via magnetic coils in the mat and a signal from the PEMF controller. The PEMF therapy that the PEMF mat generates is known to be beneficial for many purposes including circulation, energy levels, general wellness, inflammation, pain reduction & more.

Depending on the size of the PEMF mat and the brand, PEMF mats can be anywhere from $499 USD up to $6,000 USD. Price isn’t always an indication of quality or performance however, consider, our number one recommended PEMF mat is $2,499 USD and even includes infrared in addition to advanced PEMF therapy. Some brands may have inflated pricing because of business models like MLM structures.

Typically the full benefits of PEMF therapy can be realized within 20 minutes on a PEMF mat, however as long as the PEMF frequency and intensity is within the safe range you may use your PEMF mat as many times (or for as long as you like) every day. See our section on PEMF Safety on this page to see what we consider the safe range for intensity and frequency for an extended duration.

Known benefits of a PEMF mat from the PEMF therapy it applies can include improved circulation, reduced inflammation, pain management, improved cell recovery, improved bone regeneration among others including energy levels and wellness in general. PEMF therapy however is NOT a cure for any disease or ailment and you should be skeptical of anyone saying their PEMF product is a cure all.

A PEMF mat works by generating its PEMF therapy via coils in the mat which receive electric impulses known as the PEMF signal from the mat controller. It’s these electric impulses from the controller which when put through the coils of the mat generate a pulsing electromagnetic field. Check out our page on How PEMF Works for more information about how the therapy itself works.

Yes you can sleep on a PEMF mat, however when using PEMF therapy for extended periods of time it’s important to be aware of how high the frequency and intensity of the PEMF is. See our section on PEMF Safety for our thoughts on this.

Typically yes, PEMF mats are safe for daily use – however for long duration usage we recommend being cognizant of internationally recognized standards for magnetic field exposure which you can review in our PEMF Safety section. Also there are contraindications for some individuals such as those with pacemakers, see our other page on PEMF safety & side effects for a list of people who shouldn’t use PEMF.

Start slow and build up as you learn how you react. For context about effective PEMF I recommend reading about results from PEMF studies in various frequency and intensity ranges in our macro-analysis and checking out our tips on some practical guidance to picking PEMF frequencies.

This might be a little tricky for those new to PEMF, however our PEMF Signal Macro Analysis did show that there were benefits to be found both at low, low intensity and higher intensity PEMF so you probably can’t go too wrong. One option is to pick a mat with fully controllable intensity, so you can run it at only 0.1 Gauss if you like, or right up to 10 Gauss, like the OMI Beyond PEMF Mat offers. Take a look at our Low Gauss Intensity picks for a look at some adjustable intensity PEMF mats.

  1. I have heard recently that PEMF is great for autoimmune conditions. So I was looking into mats or devices that would be best. Do you have any information on that?

    Reply
    • Hi Shelly,

I don’t have anything specifically for autoimmune and PEMF, you can search the PEMF database I put together and see if you find any specific studies about it, PEMF Study Explorer.

My limited understanding of autoimmune disorders is that a common issue is the inflammatory response they cause in the body, which is probably why you’ve heard that PEMF can be helpful, because many studies do show PEMF to be beneficial for inflammation.

I did do a write up specifically on PEMF for pain looking at the studies from the database I linked to above which are about pain, on that page I created a 56 Study PEMF for Pain Database Explorer as well and showed whatever statistics I could from those 56 studies.

You may find the write up on that page interesting, I prefer to disclaim always that I am not a medical professional, and anything you find on the website here is just what I’ve found looking at these research studies and my own opinion that’s developed over the years, you can see my disclaimer for more info.

Now that being said, you’ll find on the PEMF for Pain page a couple things, one is studies show PEMF reduces inflammation, can cause an analgesic effect, and microcirculation and tissue repair – so perhaps its from all of these together that people see benefits.

Second thing you’ll find on that page, in the FAQ section, is “What is the best PEMF frequency and intensity for pain?”, which based on the weighting of settings in the PEMF for Pain studies, we see the most positive results between 10 and 20 Gauss, and below 30Hz frequency.

That’s where it’s probably relevant to picking a PEMF mat, I would look for one which does between 1 to 30 Hz frequencies, and will do in that 10 to 20 Gauss range, and I would pick one with infrared heat as well because of the benefits for pain and circulation would probably only be of benefit (you can always run some of these mats with the heat turned off and only the PEMF turned on).

Staying within a certain frequency setting is quite simple just by using the setting on the PEMF controller, the intensity will always vary depending on distance from the PEMF coils in the mat but to be in the closest range to 10 to 20 Gauss and not below, or way, way over, I would point you in the direction of the Healthy Wave High Intensity PRO PEMF Mat, that link will take you to details on this page I put together.

I did my best to summarize the intensities and frequencies reported by brands by their spec pages, or their self tested results and I recommend considering the intensity factor when choosing one out for yourself.

One other consideration would be the Healthy Wave Multi-Wave mat, it actually comes with 2 controllers, one is the Multi-wave controller, which you get 5 different intensity settings, but it also comes with a their “classic” controller which puts out a Peak Gauss of around 15+ and an average surface Gauss of 3.5 (hence why I thought of the High intensity mat first, closer to that 10-20 Gauss range).

Let me know if you have any follow up questions but hopefully that gives you some food for thought!

Thanks for leaving a comment 🙂
