How We Evaluate & Review Amethyst Crystal Mats
5 Criteria we will evaluate here to help you pick the best amethyst mat for yourself.
Does the amethyst mat use high grade amethyst?
What kind of quality control is there around the crystals?
Is the amethyst mat made with EMF shielding to block harmful EMF’s?
Does the mat’s controller operate only on a timer to ensure the heat shuts off if left on accidentally?
If it turns out an amethyst mat isn’t the right fit for you, what kind of return options are there?
Although there are no moving parts in an amethyst mat, what kind of warranty is there to cover you if something goes wrong?
Why use Amethyst Crystal in an Infrared Heating Mat?
Amethyst crystals have been used for ages as tools to balance chakras, aid in sleep, and as all around precious health stones, but setting this aside there is a more practical reason to use them in an infrared heating mat.
Infrared heat is simply a wavelength of light, just beyond the visible spectrum, which warms us, like the warmth we feel from the sun which is also infrared heat.Amethyst crystal when heated emits infrared heat in the same wavelength range as the human body does, making it the obvious choice in an infrared mat to align the infrared heat therapy as closely as we can to our own bodies.
How do Amethyst Mats Work, and do they Really Work?
Amethyst mats do really work as infrared heat therapy mats and they can be a great tool for rest, relaxation, rejuvenation and even pain relief.
I used my amethyst infrared & PEMF mat every evening for months while recovering from an extremely painful disc herniation and it was a place I could feel good at the end of the day, irreplaceable during those months of recovery.
Amethyst mats generate infrared heat closely aligned to the body’s own infrared wavelengths and negative ions like we find in nature and near water.
The process is simple, the mat is constructed to plug into the wall, and heat the crystals with electricity.
The heated crystals then emit infrared heat in the wavelength range of the human body, and refreshing negative ions which we can receive by laying on the amethyst mat.
Amethyst Mat Benefits & Who can Benefit ?
Most people will experience infrared amethyst mat benefits when they use a mat and some perhaps even moreso, for example myself during my months, close to a year, of recovery from my disc herniation.
The benefits of an amethyst mat closely resemble those you can receive from an infrared mat because most infrared mats use amethyst to generate their heat.
However using amethyst instead of other crystals or methods of infrared heat generation provide the additional, long known benefits of amethyst crystals like activating the crown & third eye chakras, promoting relaxation and sleep, as well as emitting negative ions.
Amethyst Benefits
- Outputs negative ions when heated reducing stress, aiding sleep and mood
- Promotes delta/theta brainwaves to promote deep relaxation and better sleep
- Activates the “crown” and “third eye” chakras linked to perception & spiritual expansion
Infrared Benefits
- Reduction of pain & stiffness
- Detoxifying the body
- Relieves back pain symptoms
- Reduces chronic fatigue
- Relieves muscle & joint pain
- Prepares skin for sun exposure
- Improvement in peripheral motor functions
- Suppresses vascular inflammation
The benefits of infrared therapy are quite well studied as well, and most of those benefits, except those only received in an infrared sauna, will also apply to an infrared amethyst mat.
My Amethyst Mat Evaluation Criteria
Like listed above we have 5 amethyst mat evaluation criteria to review for each amethyst mat.
These review criteria look specifically at the amethyst crystal of the mats, and are partially similar to my infrared mat evaluation criteria because amethyst mats are in fact infrared mats.
The criteria are as follows.
- Amethyst Crystal Quality
- Amethyst Crystal Quantity
- Mat Safety
- Return Policies
- Warranty Policies
After we review the above list of criteria be sure to check the next section on Other Considerations Before Purchase of an amethyst infrared mat.
Amethyst Crystal Quality
What kind of quality standards does each mat have when it comes to the Amethyst Crystal?
When you buy an amethyst mat, you’re basically buying a large quantity of crystals, not just an infrared therapy device.
This is one of the first things that came to mind when considering an amethyst mat for myself, does the brand have any quality control mechanisms when it comes to their amethyst crystal?

Amethyst Crystal Quantities
How much actual Amethyst crystal, and other crystals do you get with each amethyst mat option?
Crystal quantities are indeed something worth comparing when it comes to choosing an amethyst mat.
Some cheaper options may only be cheaper because you’re not actually getting as much in your mat.
Note that for the pad and chair options I listed crystal quantities for the most comparable sizes I could find, not all the brands have a chair mat, or a pad to compare. For example HigherDose doesn’t have a pad option, only a chair mat option.
That’s why I included the mat sizes alongside the crystal quantities so you can have a size reference for each as you read through.

Amethyst Mat Safety
Amethyst Mat EMF Shielding & Controller Comparisons
When it comes to safety with an amethyst mat, there isn’t that much that can go wrong, but it’s still good to be aware of a couple of things!
We’re looking at whether the mat uses EMF shielding for unwanted EMFs (which all electronics produce, but we don’t want in a therapy product) and whether the controller operates on a timer so it will eventually turn off the heat on its own.
EMF Shielding & Controller Comparisons

Return Policies
Does the product work for you?
Here we will compare the return policies with their details of each of our top 5 amethyst mats.
If it’s your first time trying an amethyst mat, the only way to be sure it works for you is to try it for a little while.
Comparing the return policies beforehand means that you know what to expect and how long you have to reconsider your purchase once you start using it.

Warranty Policies
Does the warranty back the product up?
With any amethyst infrared mat the warranty is a very high priority item.
Even though there are no moving parts in amethyst mats, they are electrical appliances of a sort and as such can be susceptible to component failure.
Between the mat and its’ controller, the controller is the more complex electrical component and is therefore more prone to issues or failure than the mat itself.
This is why I place extra weight on the controller warranty in addition to the regular warranty for our list of amethyst mats.

Other Considerations Before Purchasing an Amethyst Mat
There are a couple additional aspects you may wish to consider prior to your purchase of an amethyst mat.
One is to consider where you plan on placing, or using the mat on a regular basis.
Most mats require a flat and firm surface, and I use mine on the floor beside the couch for example.
If you would be disappointed to not be able to use your amethyst mat on the couch or nestled into a chair however, then I would recommend a soft and flexible mat option, of which only the Healthy Wave offers a real flexible option, the Soft & Flexible Amethyst Healthy Wave Mat.
The reason for this is that the design of most amethyst mats include internal heating elements which cannot bend at all.
Another consideration is the weight of the mat. You wouldn’t think it at first, but amethyst crystal is as heavy as stones, and for a full size mat this can be a bit weighty.
If you plan on taking your mat with you on a regular basis this is something to consider. Most brands include a helpful carrying bag, or like the Biomat, a whole large suitcase.
There are actually quite a number of sizes and shapes available when it comes to amethyst mats, especially a wide variety of sizes of Healthy Wave mats and MediCrystal mats.
One more consideration before you buy an amethyst mat would be whether to choose one which includes PEMF therapy, let’s look at that in the next section.
Amethyst Infrared Mats vs PEMF Mats
If you’re looking at buying an amethyst mat, should you be considering one which includes PEMF therapy?
For most people I would say yes, you should consider getting an amethyst mat which includes PEMF therapy.
I say this for a couple of reasons:
- PEMF therapy is beneficial for many of the same applications as the infrared therapy of an amethyst mat and therefore combining the two may yield better results (for example, improved circulation, improved sleep, joint pain relief, low back pain relief, etc.)
- If you consider the right brands, you can actually buy an amethyst mat with PEMF for less than an amethyst mat without PEMF
We’ve done our own extensive research on PEMF and applied our findings when reviewing the most popular products which you can read about on our PEMF mats page.
Personally, the mat I have at home which got me through months, almost a year, recovering from awful nerve pain from my disc herniation is the Healthy Wave Pro 4 Therapy Infrared PEMF Mat 74″ x28″.
I like to use the infrared heat in my mat in the evenings if I’m watching TV with the PEMF at a low frequency of 4Hz to get ready for bed while in the mornings and afternoons I’ll use the PEMF at a higher, but natural frequency of 16 Hz to help keep my mind refreshed and clear and my body awake.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an amethyst mat?
An amethyst mat is a mat similar in size to a yoga mat, which uses a layer of amethyst crystal to generate far infrared heat therapy and negative ions which you can receive by simply laying upon the mat.
Why use amethyst in an infrared mat?
The real reason to use amethyst in an infrared mat over other methods of infrared heat generation is because the infrared wavelengths of amethyst are the closest to that of the human body’s own infrared wavelengths, and in addition the amethyst crystal will output therapeutically beneficial negative ions when heated.
How does an amethyst mat work?
An amethyst mat works by first electrically heating the amethyst crystals of the mat which will then emit far infrared heat and negative ions which we can receive by simply laying upon the mat. It’s mostly from the infrared heat therapy that we will receive the benefits of improved circulation, improved sleep, and relief from minor aches and pains.
How do you use amethyst mat?
To use an amethyst mat all you need to do is, plug it in, turn it on to the desired temperature setting, wait for it to heat up, and then lay down on it, that’s all!
What does an amethyst mat do?
An amethyst mat generates infrared heat therapy and negative ions by heating the amethyst crystals within the mat. The infrared heat therapy of the amethyst will then heat your body from the inside out like the sun and improve circulation, sleep and provide relief from minor aches and pains.
What are the benefits of amethyst crystal mat?
The benefits of an amethyst crystal mat are improving delta/theta brainwaves to promote relaxation and better sleep, activating the crown and third eye chakras, outputting refreshing negative ions, reducing pain and stiffness, relieving back pain symptoms, improving circulation, relieving muscle & joint pain, among other benefits received from the amethyst and infrared heat generation.
