Our Summary
This article discusses 2 Italian studies on the effects of PEMF on avascular necrosis of the femoral head. Both studies showed that short term PEMF may protect the articular cartilage from inflammation and bone-marrow edema while long term treatment can stimulate osteogenic activity at the necrotic area hindering bone collapse and fracture. In conclusion, PEMF treatment may be utilized on the treatment of Ficat stage-I or II disease or delay joint replacement.
